Jenna Wortham, fan of our Emoji issue and the technology reporter for the NY Times, just wrote “Online Emotions, in Hundreds of New Flavors” about emoji. While this may be considered old news, Wortham specifically points out the new sticker fad in apps; an expert says it may be too late for them to catch on.
Stickers or no, we still don’t want to live a life without emoji.

The absolute best reporting we’ve seen on the history of emoji (and not just the emoticon), especially its origin in and spread from Japan: “How emoji conquered the world" from the Verge.

Mashable's "A Brief History of the Emoticon" is wildly outdated, considering it was written in Sept. 2011, but there are a couple of interesting gems, like this 1982 post on a Carnegie Mellon message board, which is credited as the first emoticon.
